Flexible Work Arrangements Build Loyalty

Flexible Work Arrangements Build LoyaltyFlexible Work Arrangements Build LoyaltyFlexible Work Arrangements Build LoyaltyWith tight hiring budgets and few qualified applicants, the old approach of on-site, full-time and 9-to-5 is falling by the wayside for many companies. Employers around the country are meeting their project deadlines and need for quality by engaging employees in a wide range of non-traditional employment configurations. Some smart employers are also holding on to top talent who would otherwise resign by engaging employees with flexible arrangements. Employers who insist on conventional full-time employment are setting themselves up for long fill times and the unnecessary misery of trying to find qualified full-time people.Keep the Good OnesWhen a job opening is created, broaden your usual approach. In addition to seeking a full-time replacement, consider offering exiting employees, ex-employees and job applicants a non-traditional arrangement that meets immediate co mpany and candidate needs. For example, a manager faced with a valued employees resignation in order to return to school, care for an elderly parent or child, or because of health problems, could offer to reconfigure the job, enabling the employee to continue to work. 13 Tricks Advertisers Use to Get You to Spend Your Money

13 Tricks Advertisers Use to Get You to Spend Your Money13 Tricks Advertisers Use to Get You to Spend Your MoneyThe craft of advertising itself is hundreds of years old, but it has evolved into a science in the last 50 or 60 years, with creativity and methodology working together to sell you hard. The following 13 strategies used by advertisers have had great success in selling products and services for a couple of generations, and continue to be used most often. Scare Tactics The message here is that bad things might happen to you if you dont have this product or service. This is most often used to sell products related to security, personal safety, or health. But fear can creep into advertising for many other products and services. For instance, the fear of missing out (or FOMO) is increasingly used to persuade consumers. In an age when information and entertainment are ubiquitous, how do you make sure you see everything youre supposed to see? Thats why you need this phone, thi s app, or this TV package. The Promise of Happiness The promise of happiness never loses its power. From cars and jewelry to dating services and electronic gadgets, the basic message never changes Buy this product or service and youll be filled with joy. The promised happiness is real but fleeting. Pretty soon, youre looking for a new thing to bring back that feeling of elation. This is sometimes called retail therapy. Status Anxiety Otherwise known as keeping up with the Joneses. You may love your three-year-old Honda, but a top-of-the-line BMW will make your neighbors green with envy. Use of this strategy has, if anything, increased in recent years with the proliferation of new-and-improved gadgets. That is why many people you know have traded in their perfectly good smartphones for new models that cost far more. Limiting Availability Creating artificial scarcity is a great way to boost demand. This is why many manufacturers produce limited-edition versions of their pr oducts to tie in with current movies or TV series. A little extra branding is applied to a product that isnt at all scarce- but the variation is. Nike produces limited-edition sneakers and people pay huge sums for them in the secondary market. Becoming Your Friend One way to create brand awareness is to make a product appear to have the endorsement of your own circle of friends, or at least people like your friends. Social media campaigns have done an extraordinary job of finessing this strategy with fun videos and messages encouraging you to interact with the brand message. These marketing campaigns are, of course, mixed in with posts from your real friends. When you next buy a certain product or service, guess which brand you reach for? Positive Association Brands love to associate themselves with the positive qualities that celebrities embody. Someone is always the baddest tough guy, the model with the most gorgeous hair, or the sports star with the fastest feet. Brands t ake this positive association and attach it indelibly to their products. One of the more subtle uses of this strategy is the product placement, in which a brand is inserted neatly but leid too unobtrusively into a movie or television show. Making You Laugh Why are so many Super Bowl ads funny? Why do so many social media marketing posts make you laugh? The answer is simple. Laughter is a positive emotion, and when you link a positive association with a brand, consumers are more likely to choose it. Even insurance companies and banks use humor, and these are not products that most of us want to entrust to a comedian. But humor works. It certainly is a more effective marketing tool than a plain recitation of facts. Humanizing Things and Animals Its known as anthropomorphism, and in advertising, its a surefire way to get you to sit up and take notice. Talking animals like the Geico gecko, the Aflac duck, and Tony the Tiger are prime examples. Its unexpected, its usually humorou s, and it encourages us to connect emotionally with the brand. Variations include giving human features to inanimate objects. A prosaic thing has become cute and likable. aya you want to buy that thing. Reverse Psychology This strategy can be as obvious as Patagonias famous Dont Buy This Jacket ad, or more subtle, like the incredible Lemon ad for Volkswagen. In the latter example, they called their own car a lemon, but when you found out why, you wanted it more. This is intended to give the consumer a false sense of control and superiority. In effect, it says dont tell me what to do or think, Ill do that myself. Its a time-honored strategy for dealing with children, and it works just as well on adults. Sex Appeal Sex sells...it really does. And sexually charged imagery has been used to sell beer, cars, phones, clothing, cheeseburgers (looking at you, Carls Jr.), and even furniture. We all fall for it. Its a deeply natural response, and the fact that it usually has nothing to do with the product itself seems to have no impact whatsoever. The Emptiness Within No advertiser will tell you bluntly that your life is awful but it will be better if you buy this product. But they can suggest it, and they do. This technique often uses before-and-after images to dramatize just how much better someone like you feels after buying that new coat, watch, or car. A common variation illustrates how youll feel even worse if you make the wrong choice. Celebrity Endorsement This is a variation on the strategy of creating associations with celebrities. With platforms like Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook, celebrity endorsements are bigger and subtler than ever. A makeup brand lingering in obscurity could run a multi-million dollar branding and awareness campaign. Or it could pay Kim Kardashian West $250,000 to endorse it on Instagram. That may sound like a lot, but with more than 100 million followers, she can give a brand a lot of bang for its buck. Peer Pressur e Most consumers dont care to be out there on the bleeding edge of a new product or service. There are early adopters, and then there are the masses who buy it once it has gained acceptance. This strategy attempts to persuade you that youre the only one in your peer group that doesnt own X product or service. Nobody really wants to be an outsider.

Less Common Signs You Have a Bad Manager - The Muse

Less Common Signs You Have a Bad Manager - The MuseLess Common Signs You Have a Bad Manager Its pretty obvious when you have a horrible boss. From the verbal abuse to the micromanaging to the refusal to respect your time, it doesnt take a genius to recognize when your manager is the sole cause of your misery. But sometimes, the signs arent so obvious. Especially when the person you report to is likable, perfectly pleasant, and competent. But those traits dont mean jack if, actually, your boss isnt a good boss. In fact, I hate to be the bearer of badeanstalt news but its entirely possible that what you have on your hands is a bad manager, and its high time you face it, unless you dont give a fig about your career. These five signs might surprise you, but stop for a second and think about the damage theyre causing (think stunted career and lack of advancement). While it might be nice to work under someone you get along with, thats far from the only thing you should value in this relati onship.1. They Never Offer Critical FeedbackTheres always plenty of praise. Your supervisor knows how to say thank you and lets you know youre doing good work, but they dont know how to give you constructive feedback, which can ultimately help you produce better work and grow you into a leader yourself. What to DoAsk for feedback. Say, I appreciate hearing what Im doing well, but Im always looking to improve, and so itd be useful to me if you were able to start incorporating critical feedback into our meetings so I know what to focus on.2. They Dont Recognize Your potenzialYou may be OK with the way things are going at work. You wouldnt exactly say youre coasting- you just know how to do your job really well. After all, youve been doing the same thing for the past two and a half years. Youve been given mora tasks, and you always handle them with aplomb. Dont mistake this with growth or realized potential. If its true that youve been handling the same items since you started (even if your to-do list has steadily increased), you may be stuck in a rut, your mental muscles atrophying. What to DoArticulate your desire to expand your skill set and take on more responsibility that goes beyond simply taking on more of what you already do. If your request goes unheard and nothing changes, it might be time to look for a new job, one where you can make the most of your abilities and rise through the ranks like you deserve. 3. They Have No Idea How Hard Youre WorkingYour manager sees you in the office and assumes your hours are more or less similar to theirs. The reality, however, is that youre doing a couple of hours of work each night and many more over the weekend. Your vacations are not unplugged. Nope, youre answering to clients and putting in an hour of work during your morning commute. If you did the math, youd estimate youre working about 65 hours a week. You like the work, so its not the worst thing ever, but its stressful and exhausting. What to DoAdmitting your e feeling overworked and overwhelmed isnt fun, but its necessary if, all things considered, youre happy doing what youre doing, but you just cant sustain the pace. Muse writer Jennifer Winter offers three options for broaching this tough topic.4. They Play Favorites (and Youre the Favorite)Its nice to be the teachers pet, isnt it? Who doesnt want to be appreciated by the person in charge of their paycheck? Step back though and try to put yourself in others shoes and ask yourself how it would feel to have your manager favor your co-worker and regularly snub you. Being best buddies might feel good in the moment, but its inappropriate and unprofessional, and it isnt teaching you a darn thing. What to DoSince you probably dont want to call him out for this behavior, you can try to work around it. Praise your co-workers efforts and regularly point out the kollektivwork involved in completing projects. This might as well be called advanced managing up. Your goal is not to get him to start ignoring you, but to envelop the whole team5. They Prioritize the Team Over the CompanyYour managers super territorial and cares about each and every person on their team like youre all their own children. The work your group is responsible for is the number one priority, and, as a result, they often reject cross-collaboration opportunities with other teams or refuse to modify their way of thinking and doing to better work as a whole company and not just a small part of it.What to DoThe next time you get wind of a project that would allow you to work with another department, speak up before they have a chance to pass it onto someone else. Let them know you recognize your priorities within the team but that youre also quite interested in this new initiative and think it would ultimately benefit the company if you were able to spend time on things that speak to the organizations overall mission. The good news is that most of these situations can be resolved with a frank conversation. C onsidering the nightmarish work situations out there, these arent so awful. Still, you dont want to be deceived by seemingly harmless things that could negatively impact your career. And the sooner you take action, the sooner you can get ahead.

7 Tips on Being the Right Kind of Professional at Work

7 Tips on Being the Right Kind of Professional at Work 7 Tips on Being the Right Kind of Professional at Work Article by Karin VandraissA few minutes into my morning commute, I glanced up from my book and inwardly groaned. When I should have been looking out across the water at the Seattle skyline, I was headed down an unfamiliar side street toward a neighborhood nowhere near my sekretariat.I pulled out my phone to send my babo a quick email Good morning, just wanted to let you know Ill be in a few minutes late. Bus trouble She shot back a cheery, No problem, see you soon I then sent my coworker a text with a few choice words and emojis about my inability to master public transportation. After nearly a year at my current job, I know its customary to send a note if youll be arriving significantly later than usual as a courtesy. Although my boss and I are on very friendly terms, a quick email is more appropriate than texting but I do have friends who wouldnt think twice about sending their boss a text, emojis and all, or wouldnt have sent an update in the first place because that would be considered overkill in their office. No two company cultures are quite the same, and figuring out what professional means in your office or even just on your immediate team isnt always easy.Professionalism will differ depending on your line of work as well for example, my internal emails laden with Full House gifs probably wouldnt fly at my best friends law firm.It took me a few weeks of careful observation to get the lay of the land at my new job. To do so, I had to observe everythingfrom what my new coworkers were wearing to whether they took lunch or ate at their desks. I took mental notes (more trendy jeans than traditional geschftliches miteinander casual wear same went for going out versus working through lunch). A similar mentality seemed to apply to communication style as well, which leaned toward casual rather than overly formal.I took particular note of the emails I was receiving, because today there is such a thing as being too professional. Although theres still a time and place for formalities, most people I work with have adopted a more business casual approach to communication (both in person and from behind a computer), one that makes it seem like youre actually interacting with another human being rather than a robot. But findingthat perfect combination of personable and consummate professional is a learned skill. Luckily, I happen to work with a few people who seem to have mastered the concept, and Ive picked up a few things from themThe Art of the EmailNavigating the subtle nuances of email is an art form one punctuation misstep and things can go downhill quickly. Ionce spent a full day agonizing over a five-line email, my finger hovering over send like the free world depended on my message being executed perfectly.1. Watch Your ToneAlthough you shouldnt give any email that much thought, you should think a little aboutthe tone youre g oing for inthe message and the appropriate level of formality. When first writing someone, I aim for conversational, letting my personal voice show through while retaining the basic elements of formality, like a proper greeting, punctuation, spelling, etc. Depending on the response, Ill adjust my correspondence accordingly. In my experience, matching another persons tone can often make for better communication. (But dont feel the need to sacrifice your intellectual integrity for someone intent on typingu instead of you.)2. The Period Is No Longer NeutralYou can feel the chill from across the office when someone sends you a sentence purposefully cut short with a period. Once unthreatening, this punctuation mark can now convey a healthy dose of snark, sternness, or even aggression. Take a second glance at your next message to make sure that period doesnt make you sound unintentionally menacing or uptight.3. Its Okay to Use Exclamation Points (Sparingly)Exclamation points can be effect ive ways to express enthusiasm (or give an otherwise flat email a sense of levity) if used with restraint. I try to stick to one per email, and I draw a firm line at emoticons.4. Your Sign-Off Can Say a LotA few years ago, I wouldnt have thought anything of it, but today, ending an email with Thanks can make you seem inadvertently curt. I usually use Best or All the best if Im feeling fancy. I dont see Sincerely too often anymore, except on college intern applications. But Dont Get Too ComfortableWhether its via email or face to face, there are still a few areas where you can never be too professional, no matter how its defined in your workplace. At the end of the day, yourestill at work. Being able to preserve working relationships should always be high on your priority list.5. Be TactfulEven if your office has a laid-back vibe, its pretty hard to come back from an uncomfortably flippant or politically incorrect remark. Use your filter. Whether yourein a brainstorming session or jus t chatting in the break room, youre still in a work environment. Theres a level of professional respect expected you never know what might offend another person.6. Be ConstructiveIf theres an issue, offer a solution dont just continue the negativity. It makes people uncomfortable and detracts focus from solving the problem. Avoid comments that could come off as belittling or condescending, especially in group settings.7. Keep Your CoolThrowing a temper tantrum at work will instantly mark you with a glowing neon sign above your head that reads, Cant keep it together like an adult. A temper tantrumincludes slamming drawers, stomping around, sighing loudly, and/or aggressively muttering to yourself. If you have an issue with someone or something, take a walk, count to 10, or do whatever it is you need to do to keep yourself from losing it. If you feel the need to raise the concern with a superior, collect your thoughts beforehand and head into the room with a cool head.A version of th is article originally appeared on SUCCESS.com.Karin Vandraiss is a Seattle-based writer and editor with a background in food and travel. Study Being forgetful can actually make you smarter

Study Being forgetful can actually make you smarterStudy Being forgetful can actually make you smarterYou can relax if remembering everything is not your strong suit. Recent research makes the case that being forgetful can be a strength - in fact, selective memory can even be a sign of stronger intelligence.Traditional research on memory has focused on the advantages of remembering everything. But looking through years of recent memory data, researchers Paul Frankland and Blake Richards of the University of Toronto found that the neurobiology of forgetting can be just as important to our decision-making as what our minds choose to remember. The goal of memory is not the transmission of information through time, per se. Rather, the goal of memory is to optimize decision-making. As such, transience is as important as persistence inmnemonicsystems, their study in Neuron states. It helps us forget outdated informationMaking intelligent decisions does not mean you need to have all the info rmation at hand, it just means you need to hold onto the fruchtwein valuable information. And that means clearing up space in your memory palace for the most up-to-date information on clients and situations. Our brains do this by generating new neurons in our hippocampus, which have the power to overwrite existing memories that are influencing our decision-making.If youre trying to navigate the world and your brain is constantly bringing up multiple conflicting memories, that makes it harder for you to make an informed decision, Richards told Science Daily. If you want to increase the number of new neurons in our brains learning region, try exercising. Moderate aerobic exercise like jogging, power walking, and swimming have been found to increase the number of neurons making important connections in our brains. It helps us see the big pictureWhen we forget the names of certain clients and details about old jobs, our brain is making a choice that these details do not matter. Although t oo much forgetfulness can be a cause for concern, the occasional gelbkreuzgas detail can be a sign of a perfectly healthy memory system. The researchers found that our brains facilitate decision-making by stopping us from focusing too much on minor past details. Instead, the brain promotes generalization, helping us remember the most important gist of a conversation. One of the things that distinguishes an environment where youre going to want to remember stuff versus an environment where you want to forget stuff is this question of how consistent the environment is and how likely things are to come back into your life, Richards said.If youre an analyst who meets with a client weekly, your brain will recognize that this is a client whose name and story you need to remember. If this is someone you may never meet again, your brain will weigh that information accordingly. We can get critiqued for being absent-minded when we forget past events in perfect detail. These findings show us tha t total recall can be overrated. Our brains are working smarter when they aim to remember the right stories, not every story.

5 Tricky As Hell Job Interview Questions and Answers

5 Tricky As Hell Job Interview Questions and Answers5 Tricky As Hell Job Interview Questions and AnswersWe all love to answer questions that highlight our finest features and invite us to tell all those stories concerning our past achievements and glorious moments of deserved triumph. Nevertheless, in some cases we are faced with challenging job interviewquestions on how bad we are at certain things and how often weve screwed things up. And how much.Honesty is the best policy, some claim. The optimal answering strategy for someone faced with the following job interviewquestions, would be to carefully measure ones degree of candidness and be open and sincere. Nevertheless, you should at the same time avoid sharing stories about failures and drawbacks that might influence the hiring managers impression of you in a negative way. Regardless of the urge to be vocal about your flaws, try not to be inadequately blunt. Which means, dont tell your reader stories about conflicts on the workpla ce, neither do admit that youre secretly chatting with your girlfriend during work. That wont sound charmingly menschenfreundlich, were positive. So, lets examine some of those tortuous job interviewquestions and the humble and elegant replies that might as well get you hired. What is your biggest weakness? When asked that question one may feel tempted to demonstrate honesty and come along as pleasantly straight-forward. Regardless of the urge to be vocal about your flaws, its actually better NOT to come up with a vivid narrative of how you sometimes smack annoying colleagues or dont shower for 2-3 days to get mora work done. You will be perceived as neither entertaining, nor pleasant. One decent way to respond to this question is to choose a trait of yours which is not entirely disadvantageous. For instance, you can point out at your perfectionism and mention that sometimes your knack for details annoys others around you. A lot.Or, you can pick a positive characteristic of yours and analyze its potential downside.Wrong Answer I am very emotional and when something is bugging me I have the habit to unleash on my closest colleagues by forming a spectacular scandal for everyone to witness. Its only then that I feel relieved. And were all human after all. (Get the point here?)Right Answer Look, I like to examine details very closely before picking up the best idea I am of the habit to take potential risks of launching a new project into consideration and do my best to take precautions. These characteristics of mine might be viewed as annoying by a more impatient colleague or one that has to meet specific deadlines. 2. Why do you think you will be successful in this job?To give a loud account of your abilities might indicate self-promoting and boasting. And you know what nobody likes? Nobody likes a show-off. And interviewers tend not to like complacent and haughty people as well. This question is not an invitation to demonstrate false modesty or to deliberately be little your achievements and qualification either. Just research the employer thoroughly prior to the interview and have several useful qualities of yours in mind ready to answer such a question.Wrong Answer I just feel like Ill fit right. My intuition is telling me so. And I had a chance to notice you had a lot of girls working here, are theyre all married? I like to work with girls. Brings out the best in me. In various ways. Uhwhat welches the question again?Right AnswerI think that my previous experience as a absatzwirtschaft specialist makes me a suitable and qualified candidate for the position. Moreover, having succeeded to generate a profit of 100 000 USD for my prior employer by launching the project X (quote the name of the project, and do quote the numbers) makes me think I have the capacity to do it again and even more successfully at your company. 3. Tell me about a bad experience you had with an employer?Admitting your previous boss was a dick wont make your interview er experience disdain toward them and simultaneously feel sympathy your way. This, just like number 1, is a question aimed at elicitinga truthful answer. Try not to badmouth your previous employer, because doing so might invite the interviewer to see you as someone fond of disloyalty.Wrong Answer My previous boss was intolerable, she was a neurotic spinster that told me I was an idiot approximately 17 times a week, but I think I got my revenge when I downloaded a shitload of important files from the company server and sold it to the competitors. A diplomatic response would be the best option here. This means try to tell about a conflict situation without evaluating it as good or bad. Do your best to be as neutral as possible about who was right and who was wrong.Right Answer I used to work for an employer that had a hard time giving me negative feedback and found it difficult to be specific about the requirements I had to meet. That resulted in me learning to be my own editor and ad visor, yet I was often feeling confused because I wasnt sure which my skill I had to work more on and what my mistakes were from a managers perspective.Hand-picked related content 4. Give an example of a time when you handled a major crisis.Feel free to reframe this question. Major crisis can be a difficult situation or working under pressure or on a tight schedule. This is your opportunity to tell a story of how you coped with a situation and came out stronger, more resilient, and wiser. Say you dont droop when verstndigung im strafverfahrening with obstacles. Confirm obstacles do not discourage you from proceeding on the taken path.Wrong Answer I missed a deadline for an important project but managed not to pay attention to all the negative comments at the schreibstube and soon I had forgotten about my failure. I am proud with not paying too much attention to things like this. Everybody thought I had screwed up, but I didnt give a damn. We only live once. YOLO.Right Answer I had a health problem and a lot of work to do and I was afraid I wouldnt have the resources do my work accurately. I managed to reorganize my priorities so that I did the most important things first and I managed to get my health issue under control and to do my job in a new way that I found surprisingly effective. 5. What motivates you?It is not a sin to name money as a strong motivator. Nevertheless, if you dont want to come along as avid, you should try to name some additional elements that light your fire. Working in an inspiring environment is a good choice. Be concrete about your true expectations and yet try to sound down to earth.*Wrong Answer* I dont care too much about achievements Im humble and Im not a social crawler Id like the cash, thats what motivates me. And to have fun at the workplace you know laughing, flirting, having an occasional beer at lunch. Were all human. (Ah, wait You already said that on the first question)*Right Answer* I am motivated by having a chance to use my skills and improve them. I am motivated by regular, objective feedbacks given by my manager. I am motivated by transparency and challenging goals. I am motivated by giving my best and seeing how can I become better than yesterday.Do not strive too hard to mesmerize your interviewer. People tend to have little tolerance for pleasers. Especially when they have been trained to spot pleasing behaviour even when its masked with the pretence of confidence and resourcefulness.Do not use too much gestures, but try not to speak deadpan either. An expressionless face tells a lot more about its possessor that one that lets emotions dance on it.Being yourself, speaking in your own words, and being carefully honest will generally do the work.Ah, we almost forgot dont forget to smile you will be surprised how powerful your smile is ?Now that you know how to answer the scary job interview questions, youre one step ahead to fulfilling your career-destiny the only thing you now need is a fancy resume, but dont worry, weve got you covered on that cousine too For inspiration, check our 23 creative resumes. Reply Tatiana Rehmova on September 13th, 2017 - 630am Hi Monique, the best way to answer this is being hone st. Before you go to an interview, think about the time you had a conflict with a co-worker. To prepare the best answer, its good to think What does the employer want to know? And the answer is Your approach to conflict (describe what you did in order to resolve the issue, e.g. I talked to that person in private and explained how I felt, without attacking them. After some brainstorming, we came up with a quick solution. ALso, we came up with a few points to follow when we work together so that we can avoid the conflict in the future.). They also want to hear about the result of that conflict (was it a happy ending? What lessons did you learn?). Like that they get a better idea of what type of person you are and whether youd fit into their team. Hope this helps ?? Reply Mock Job Interview Questions on February 5th, 2018 - 1042am Thanks for shar ing this valuable information. Its very useful for students and job seekers. I want to share one more question i.e. Explain why I should hire you. I am great, I really need a job, not a good answer for here. This is a time to give the employer a laundry list of your greatest talents that just so happen to match the job description. Its also good to avoid taking potshots at other potential candidates here. Focus on yourself and your talents, not other peoples flaws. 5 Tools that Measure Your Online Brand

5 Tools that Measure Your Online Brand 5 Tools that Measure Your Online Brand Do you know if all the effort you put into your Web presence is paying off? Here are a few easy ways to find out fast. The best kind of personal branding is three-pronged:(1) Real-world communications activities (like public speaking, writing articles for print publications); (2) Virtual visibility; and (3) Community-building through social media. Not only can you reach beyond your immediate circle, you can measure the influence your actions have on the broader online community.Measuring your personal brand’s success is easy. But have you tried yet? Do you know how big your brand is on the Web?Here are five easy-to-use W eb tools to help you get a handle on how powerful and prevalent your virtual personal brand is:Google Alerts [www.google.com/alerts]Google Alerts notify you via e-mail when your name shows up on the Web, and it provides links to the reference sites so you can see exactly what’s being said. This is a great way to stay on top of all references to your name. When you establish your alerts, remember to put your name in quotation marks (“William Arruda”) so the results you get match your name exactly. You can receive alerts in real time or in daily or weekly digests. You can also use Google Alerts to track Web developments related to your area of expertise. For example, I have a Google Alert set up for “personal branding” so I can stay on top the latest articles and conversations related to my passion.TweetBeep [www.tweetbeep.com]TweetBeep is like Google Alerts for Twitter. It lets you track Twitter conversations that mention you. The updates are hourly, so you can stay connected and respond to relevant conversations. You can also track who’s writing about (“tweeting”) your Web site or blog. As Twitter becomes more and more popular, this tool will not only help you network efficiently, it will allow you to connect with those who are tweeting about you.Online ID Calculator [www.onlineidcalculator.com]We developed this tool because we s aw that there was no way to measure the strength of your online reputation. In doing research for our book “Career Distinction,” we learned that when people google someone, they judge the results based on two factors: volume and relevance. Volume speaks to the quantity of results on the Web. If there are a lot of results for a search on your name, surely you have something to say.Relevance is an even more important element. When someone googles you, he wants to assess what it says about you. Is it consistent with how you show up in the real world? Does it back up what you say on your resume or through your interactions with others? Is it compelling? Does it make those who are searching about you want to get to know you? What does it say about your personal brand?Use the Online ID Calculator now, and you will have a baseline understanding of your current online ID. Then, after a major online personal-branding campaign, you can use it again to see how the campaign affected your sc ore.bit.ly [www.bit.ly]This is a great tool to track the links that you include in your Web-based articles, blog and Twitter posts. It’s helpful because it shortens standard URLs (and this is critical â€" especially since tweets are limited to 140 characters); however, its true value lies in its tracking tools. With Bit.ly, you’re able to see in real time the frequency with which your links are clicked. This helps you understand the relative popularity of the items you post. It’s a great way to measure which sources are most popular (since you can use different bit.ly links for your blog and Twitter posts) and which posts/links generate the greatest interest.Addictomatic [www.addictomatic.com]This is an extremely useful tool that provides a comprehensive snapshot of how your brand shows up across many online search engines, including video search engines. Type your name in quotes (“William Arruda”), and see a custom page created just for you with input from Google, Twitter , Bing (Microsoft’s new decision engine), FriendFeed, Twingly YouTube, Digg, Flickr, Delicious, BlogLines, Truveo, Wikio, Yahoo, Technorati, etc. You can also use Addictomatic to get a picture of what’s happening on the WWW for your area of expertise. With all of these tools, remember: Your results represent a snapshot in time. The Web is a dynamic place. You need to be vigilant and continue to use these tools to measure the currency of your personal brand.

Strings Attached

Strings Attached Strings Attached Strings Attached Four years ago, researchers at Massachusetts Institute of Technology released a major study, Production in the Innovation Economy, which analyzed how the United States might recapture its manufacturing mojo. Buried in the report was a disturbing assessment of a group of 150 manufacturing startups founded between 1997 and 2008. These firms were based on advanced MIT technology and were, arguably, among the most likely to succeed. The authors, led by Elisabeth Reynolds, executive director of MITs Industrial Performance Center, analyzed funding, customers, supply chains, buyers, and more. The goal was to understand how those 150 companies flourished or failed in international marketsand why they were increasingly looking overseas for support when building their businesses. Their answer, in a word: scale. The U.S. provides fertile ground for startups, the authors wrote. It has the rich infrastructure of specialized skills and equipment needed to build and reengineer prototypes rapidly, develop pilot production facilities, and even reach low-volume commercial production. Yet when these firms were ready to take a giant step up to large-scale processes, the search for additional capital as well as scalable production capabilities drove many firms to relocate their production abroad. This migration, the authors argued, did more than move equipment and jobs over- seas. It took with it the hard-gained tacit knowledge needed to make that equipment operate at peak performance. It led to the migration of key skills, technical capabilities, and the ability to fully understand and improve the manufacturing process outside of the country. It also ate into the returns the public expected from investments in innovative companies through research grants and tax abatements. Even more importantly, the move overseas was dragging down the countrys future capacity to innovate by gifting other nations with tacit product and process knowledge that had taken years to attain. Four years later, we are having the same conversation all over again, albeit this time, with political undertones. As the United States and other parts of the world appear to be pivoting to more protectionist policies and attitudes, the idea of Us vs. Them is very much in the public eye today. It is happening at a time when the lives and fortunes of entrepreneurs in a wide range of different industries are more global than ever. Today, founders are accepting funding from overseas investors, setting up supply chains in different parts of the world, servicing customers internationally, and even selling their businesses to foreign government-backed funds. It is truly a global economy. As more and more U.S. manufacturing startups are becoming involved in the international economy, we have to ask how all of this is changing the landscape for U.S. entrepreneurs. Is overseas funding altering the way companies in this country do business? Are international asset sales shipping the fruits of our labor and investment overseas to help U.S. competitors? And are domestic investors and innovators losing out? A Changing World There is some reason for concern here. According to a report released in March by the European Union Chamber of Commerce in China, an organization that represents European overseas business interests, China will invest $300 billion to become self-sufficient in 10 advanced industriesfrom aerospace and next- generation wireless to semiconductors and electric carsby 2025. It plans to accomplish this by creating a host of new government-subsidized competitors, enacting policies to favor their products, and investing in technology firms overseas. If China can pull it off, this new production would effectively close off the worlds fastest-growing market from overseas competitors like Apple, Ford, General Electric, Tesla, and others. According to the report, China Manufacturing 2025 aims to secure as much as 80 percent of the domestic market in each of the target industries over the next eight years. The remaining 20 percent would be all that is left for the rest of the world. This is just one example of an ongoing trend. According to the online startup investing firm FundersClub, U.S. venture capital investment quadrupled to $83.2 billion in 2015 from $20.1 billion in 2005. In this same period, funding from overseas venture capitalists soared nearly 44 times, to $57 billion from $1.3 billion. According to the National Venture Capital Association, growing overseas funding diluted the U.S. share of global VC investment from 81 percent in 2006 to just 54 percent in 2016. I travel to about two dozen countries a year, and I see a lot of investment going into science education, said Vitaly Golomb, a California-based venture capitalist and startup business advisor. And not just software development, but physics, mechanical, chemistry, etc. China is quite strong in this. As of 2017, the U.S. still has the largest number of top 20 science universities, but that lead is shrinking quickly because of the work being done in Asia, Europe, the Middle East and elsewhere. This has helped spawn rapid growth of startup activity worldwide. The numbers are staggering. According to the Chinese government, an average of 12,000 new companies, including both tech companies and others, were registered every day in China in 2015. That totals more than four million new companies in one year. Areas like Shenzhen came out of nowhere and in the last 20, 30 years have become major areas for manufacturing, Golomb said. A lot of the worlds mechanical work is happening there now, much more than is happening in the Bay Area [surrounding Silicon Valley]. The trouble, he explains, is that the United States, and Silicon Valley in particular, effectively gave up its role as a manufacturing center decades ago, opening the door to new competition from China and elsewhere. Over the last 20 years, as the Bay Area became hyper-focused on software innovation, it lost its base of mechanical engineering and production talent. This did not look like a big problem when apps were the primary growth engine fueling U.S. technology, but now that we are transitioning to more complex, more advanced platforms including virtual reality, artificial intelligence, and autonomous transportationthe shortfall has become noticeable. Meanwhile, as innovation has shifted away from what Silicon Valley does best, the rest of the world has not been sitting idly by, but is step- ping in to address these opportunities. For the first time in its history, Silicon Valley and the U.S. tech industry are being forced to play catch-up to more developed international competitors. Business as Usual Startup founders themselves do not see it that way however. For many, success in business is a zero-sum game: they either win or lose. When building up a new company, particularly in manufacturing, where barriers to market entry are steep and startup costs prolonged, there is little room for hand wringing over funding sources, U.S. economic growth, or international relations. Founders need what they need, and if they find a better deal outside U.S. borders, then so be it. Whats more, accepting international investment often means access to markets that otherwise might be difficult for a small startup to crack, explains Scott Thielman, CTO with Product Creation Studio, an engineering and design consulting firm in Seattle that helps large brands partner with local startups. Today, the appeal of Chinese investment goes beyond just the cash, Thielman said. Access to an emerging market that is approaching the size of the U.S. market is also part of the siren song. But many market segments are strategic to China, and the investment may be tied with building capabilities in-country, he continued. I have seen this in the medical device space where small companies can access Chinese capital if they are willing to locate the RD at a tech center in China. For the most part, entrepreneurs report that these arrangements, particularly when accepting investment capital from overseas sources, have little to no impact on day-to-day operations or their long-term strategy. On the contrary, access to Asian supply chains, scale-up and manufacturing talent, and other resources that simply are not available in the U.S. today, is often highly appealing to entrepreneurs as they enter the global market. And these relationships work both ways. When overseas parties look at buying or investing in U.S. companies, it is often because they want or need access to Western design, technology, and talent. They want to partner with the startups that are driving consumer and tech trends, said Michel Marasco, director of the Farley Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation at Northwestern University, who advises startups on overseas takeovers and investment deals. International investors are very much interested in understanding more about what the companies are doing, he said. They seem to be fairly interested in using these companies as a way of establishing operations in the United States, when they dont already have some form of operations here. The cost of this activity to the U.S. GDP, if any, can be difficult to determine. Although the idea of losing American inventions and technologies to international investors and buyers is not generally good for public relations, the current landscape of global startup development has winners on both sides, and overseas involvement in U.S. companies does not necessarily mean a net loss domestically. Thats the thing with a global economy, Thielman said. You cant define hard borders when materials, people, and manufacturing processes are required from around the world. We should be patriotic about growing companies and technologies from the U.S., but that doesnt mean we cant leverage foreign investment to accelerate that and let them share in the winnings. Industry Involvement For the past 20 years, American policy has failed to help manufacturers cope with overseas competitors whose governments provided financial incentives for exports. At the same time, many established firms have moved their own production overseas, chasing low wages and lax regulations rather than investing in productivity-boosting technologies at home. The job losses and economic issues associated with this trend are well known, but the impact on RD is less discussed. In a 2010 essay published in Bloomberg Businessweek, long-time Intel CEO Andy Grove argued that the knowledge gained commercializing volume production was critical to improving new products. Without scaling, we dont just lose jobswe lose our hold on new technologies, Grove wrote. Losing the ability to scale will ultimately damage our capacity to innovate. Tom Kuczmarski, a Chicago-based product development consultant who works with both startups and Fortune 500 companies, would agree. In an environment where national policy and many corporationsundervalue manufacturing at home, why, he asks, wouldnt entrepreneurs look overseas for funding and support? Yet Kuczmarski is not a pessimist. He sees the U.S. manufacturing sector embracing innovations in production, management, distribution, and more. I think as weve gotten a little smarter, its now about specialized manufacturing, he said. Its more about creating an environment that is really aimed at entrepreneurs. Ultimately what it comes down to is that the growth of the economy comes from small companies and businessesit doesnt come from Fortune 500 companies. So, are they able to ultimately make pieces and parts and the like within the U.S.? The answer is that its still hard to do that, and I think thats ultimately where the challenge still lies. The good news, Kuczmarski explains, is that more and more large corporations are figuring this out and are taking steps to actively engage with small, entrepreneurial companies and the innovators in their industries. Those who do this well will be the most successful in the global economy, whereas those who dont are going to struggle to adapt to a world where in- novation is the currency of growth. We live in a global marketplace. Each manufacturerfrom a startup to a multinational corporationmust come to terms with that fact, if it wants to grow. The U.S. government must find a way to move the U.S. economy forward, preventing predatory pricing and mercantilist practices by exporters while at the same time reaping the international flow of ideas and funds that power innovation. Ignoring the rest of the world would not only limit the growth potential of U.S. startups, but over time would reduce Americas global leadership in innovation. If that were to happen, everyone loses, at home and abroad. Anybody thats had Economics 101 understands that protectionism doesnt work, Golomb said. And as much as it sucks that there has been a lull in manufacturing in the U.S., theres no going back. Its a global market, and theres no reason for U.S. companies to sit there ignoring the rest of the world. Tim Sprinkle is an independent technology writer. A Whole New City, A Whole New Industry A Whole New City, A Whole New Industry When creative professional Shannon Owen felt the job market slow down in Phoenix, she and her fiancé headed to Columbus, Ohio for more fertile marketing grounds.Moving for a new job is never an easy prospect. Shannon Owen had a house, a daughter and a fiancé - not to mention the rest of her family - in Phoenix. When she was laid off in March from her job as a Web designer for a small interactive marketing company, she was lucky in some respects. A former colleague offered her a temporary position filling in for someone on maternity leave. She didn’t go a week without a paycheck. But Phoenix, and the rest of Arizona, has been hit hard in this economic downturn. And her field, marketing, has been hit hard all over the country.“What I found so hard about being laid off was that I had always been an accomplished professional,” she said. “And all of a sudden, I was a statistic. The company went through a financial shift, and middle management got laid off - that was me.”The right salaryMaking it more difficult was that she wasn’t getting any response to her resume for higher-level positions - what few there were. Owen was applying to positions on job boards and getting very limited response to her resume. “I was only hearing about jobs that paid $50,000; I was getting a little desperate, wondering if I should be applying for lower-level jobs.”After a few weeks of disappointment, her fiancé heard about Ladders and suggested she give MktgLadder a try. She checked it out and noticed jobs she wasn’t seeing on the other job boards, so she signed up. She discovered the custom search tool could help her create custom searches for Phoenix, for the West Coast and for a national search. “It was helpful to have those alerts,” she said. “Once I started using those alerts, I stopped going to the other job boards. I could focus my search.”While Owen was grateful her temporary position afforded income she could count on for a few months, she also ha d to make time for her otherjob: finding a full-time position. “It was difficult to look for a job while holding down a temporary job,” Owen said. “I wouldn’t spend time during the day doing a job search. I wanted to focus on doing a good job for this employer. Then I would go home at night and spend two hours looking through alerts, sending resumes. I spent a lot of time tracking what I had applied for, and who had contacted me.”The right locationShe wanted desperately to stay in the Phoenix area, but it was becoming clear that she was going to have to make a move in order to find the type of position she wanted. In the end, it was the national search that came through first, with a company in Columbus, Ohio.“It turned out that I had talked to this company, called Blue Diesel, a few years ago, about a job. I didn’t take that job, but they are a part of a company, inVentiv Health, which does interactive marketing for health care,” she said. “I’d never done health care, but I knew it could be a good field to work in.”The position she applied for, as an associate creative director in the new division, was at the same level as her previous position. After a series of interviews, including a trip to Columbus, she was offered a job as a senior art director. “I’m hoping to progress pretty quickly,” she said. “I need to get up to speed on health care, all the pharmaceutical lingo.”And while it is difficult to leave Phoenix behind, her fiancé is also looking forward to the adventure. “My fiancé was understanding while I was going through this process,” she said. “I told him where I was applying, and we discussed the parameters. He was laid off as well, and when I got back from Columbus after the interview, it was almost a sign that it was time to make a change. He’s a sculptor; he’s got some ideas for what he will be able to do for work, and he’ll start checking things out once we get there.”Owen, who was talking about h er job search while she packed boxes in preparation for her move over Fourth of July weekend, said it was a big help that her new employer would be paying for relocation. “Had they not offered to pay for relocation, I wouldn’t have been able to make this move. We’ll be in corporate housing for two months, which gives us some time to look around.”And Columbus appeals to her on a number of levels. “I refused to go to New York or Chicago; the cost of living was too high. With Columbus, the schools are good, the cost of living is reasonable, and that helped me with making a decision.” Owen says she sees a lot of opportunity in Columbus. “I have print experience, I have interactive experience. I’m hoping to be a VP of creative for a company where I can do print and interactive. I think it will be a good move.”

Study says dating app users will respond if you have this animal in photo

Study says dating app users will respond if you have this animal in photo Study says dating app users will respond if you have this animal in photo I’ve been using the same dating profile formula for the last four years: short irreverent bio, brooding headshot, and then I close out strong with my selfie with Matt LeBlanc. This system has yielded limited success. Thankfully, AskMen and Zoosk have joined forces to uncover the factors that define the definitive dating profile, once and for all.According to an analysis of data derived from  15,314,690 photos, belonging to both male and female dating app users, if you want to boost your inbound messages, you should probably look into buying a hamster.  Zoosk’s study found that profile pics that feature these chubby rodents increase incoming messages by 351%!  In fact, there’s a  whole heap of animals that surge response rates.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! These are the most successful animal wingmen according to the report.Ewe, babyYou’re probably thinking either puppies or cats follow close behind hamsters, but oddly enough, sheep actually come it at number two, boosting message rates by 328%. Dogs and cats aren’t even in the top five. Elephants follow sheep (+314%), then horses (+282%), and then rabbits headline with a 275% surge rate.Of course, having a cuddly dog in your profile can only help. Profile pictures that feature man’s best friend offer a 265% increase to inbound messages, with cats providing a 241% upswing, right after frogs (+247%).SssssupThanks to additional analysis of 41, 054 male user profiles and 375, 454 messages, Zoosk was also able to highlight the effect merely mentioning certain pets have on inbound messages.  Simply referencing your snake in an online dating bio increases your chances of getting a response by 186%.  Users that name dropped their pet horse saw a response increase of 75%.However, if you own a bird or cat, keep it to yourself. Guys that mentioned their cats were 23% less likely to receive respo nses and those that mentioned their pet bird saw a decrease of 100%.While these tips are certainly helpful, it, of course, should be noted that the study did not disclose what kind of responses these pet owners were most likely to receive. But, even still, one or two “Cool rodent, Willard” is well worth the inbox boost. You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

When and How to Follow Up on a Job Interview Find Your Dream Job

When and How to Follow Up on a Job Interview â€" Find Your Dream Job When and How to Follow Up on a Job Interview - Find Your Dream Job You had an interview, sent a thoughtful thank you letter, and are confident that everything went well. However, the employer said he would get back to you in a week and nearly two weeks have passed. What do you do? Today you will follow up with every employer from whom you have not heard back. There are many reasons the hiring manager may not have gotten back to you, and it’s perfectly legitimate to reach out and see where they are currently in the hiring process.     Why Follow Up When done correctly, following up can not only get you the answers you need but can also remind the employer why you are a strong candidate. It can also serve to reinforce your interest in the position, and your ability to follow through. Below are strategies on when and how to follow up with an employer. When to Follow Up During your interviews, try to ask the employer when she thinks she will be able to get back to you with an answer. If you do not hear back from the employer by that day, wait a couple more days and then reach out. If you do not have any idea when the employer will get back to you, follow up after a week or two.  Yes, there is a chance you might annoy an extremely busy employer who simply has not had the time to finish the hiring process. Depending on the size of the company and the applicant pool, it may take weeks before the hiring manager is able to narrow the field to the point where she is scheduling second interviews. With a concise, positive follow-up message, you can actually remind the employer of your professionalism and communication skills, as well as your interest in the job. If you interviewed early on in the process, it may have the additional benefit of bringing attention back to your unique qualifications and aptitude for the position. Applicants seen later in the process benefit as well, by keeping their experience and skills fresh in the employer’s mind. How to Follow Up There are a number of ways to follow up with the employer. The best ways to reach out are via phone or email. If you call the hiring manager, consider writing out a script ahead of time. This gives you the opportunity to jot down a few notes to keep yourself on point, and make sure you mention any additional information you wanted to share. Again, your tone should be positive, concise and friendly. Remind the employer of your interest in the position, and simply ask where she stands in the hiring process (“You mentioned you were hoping to make a decision by Monday. I was just checking in to see where you stood in the hiring process.”). You may also ask if there are any other materials the company needs from you. If you and the employer connected on any level, or had an interesting conversation, you might briefly bring it up (“I read the New York Times article about digital media that you recommended.”). Personalizing the message will help the employer to remember you. If you decide to call, pick a less busy time of day to increase your chances of actually speaking with the interviewer. Avoid calling right after lunch or towards the end of the day. You can also follow up via email. Keep the email short and friendly, and as with a phone call, mention any personal connections you made to distinguish yourself from the other candidates. If you feel the interview did not go very well, you can also mention that you have other materials you would like to send (perhaps another reference, or a sample of your work). You could include additional materials as an attachment as well. When to Move On If you leave a message and do not hear back after a couple of days, you can try contacting the employer again in a week or so. Hiring managers are only human, and sometimes work or personal issues can cause a delay in the hiring process. By following up with a positive upbeat message, you highlight your professionalism- regardless of whether this ends up being the right job for you.   However, if you don’t hear back after sending a thank you letter and two follow-up messages (over the course of several weeks), it is best to cut your losses and start thinking about the next job opportunity. They know where to find you, and if they are unable or unwilling to follow through, this company may not have the best opportunity out there for you.

Why you shouldnt contact a hiring manager before an interview

Why you shouldn't contact a hiring manager before an interview Why you shouldn't contact a hiring manager before an interview Don’t do it.The hiring manager (who should be the key interviewer) is typically very busy and doesn’t have the time to coach you on your interview. There is also nothing in it for them - so you’re burning their time. They may be recruiting for several different positions at once and have a healthy candidate pipeline for each.As a hiring manager, I expect candidates to do their homework on the company and its products/services. You want to come across as a self-starter who does everything they can to learn and explore for themselves before asking for help.Everyone is on LinkedIn these days, so use it! See who it is you’ll be interviewing with. Also, read up on analyst reports that cover the company and its competitors. Read what it says in Glassdoor or other sites.DIY when it comes to company researchThere are so many Internet resources these days to research companies and you can often get free copies of things like analyst reports (e.g., a Gartner Magic Quadrant on their sp ace) from companies in the same space who have purchased reprint rights. Read their press releases. If they publish investor decks, read those - it will lay out the corporate strategy and priorities. Venture Funded? Check out Crunchbase and read the articles on the company. If you have done this then you’ll know where to focus and have done much of the required preparation. If there is a recruiter for the position they may be able to answer basic questions like dress code, what to expect during the interview process, the best place to park nearby (if applicable), etc.Follow Dan Holliday’s advice about the STAR approach for behavioral questions, but also have good, concise answers worked out in advance for “useless-but-common interview questions” like “Tell me about yourself?”, “What’s your greatest weakness?” and so on. Not everyone on the interview team may be a good interviewer, but it is important they feel positive about you even if they don’t know what to as k. Practice those canned answers on a friend to see if they work, then refine, rinse and repeat. This post was originally published on Quora.com.
